Film Studies at Queen Mary is ranked as the number 1 media and film studies department in the country in the Guardian university league tables 2016.

The Film Department is one of the most highly reputed centres in the UK for learning about film history, film theory and film practice.  Ranked first nationally for media and film studies (Guardian University League Tables, 2016), Queen Mary is leading the discipline with both cutting edge approaches to new avenues in film studies and dynamic projects in relation to the exhibition, production and curation of film.  With internationally acclaimed resarchers in the fields of film history and film philosophy, and expert film practitioners, we are also exploring the relationship between theory and practice, equipping all our students with an unrivalled experience of film studies.

We offer a single honours BA programme, joint honours courses with English, Drama, History and Modern Languages, and MA degrees in Film Studies and Documentary Practice. Every single honours student has the opportunity to blend the study of film history and film theory with film practice, for example learning skills in screenplay writing, fiction filmmaking and visual essay production and curation. Our thriving community of PhD students is active in our research culture, which is enriched by regular talks by visiting academics and filmmakers and department-hosted international conferences.

We are situated in the heart of the East End, close to the creative and media quarters in Hoxton, Shoreditch and Spitalfields to our west, and to the Olympic Park to our east. The production and post-production houses of Soho are a short tube journey away and a number of internationally important film studios such as Pinewood are easily accessible. Students are encouraged to use the rich resources of London to gain work experience and as a backdrop to their own film projects. The department houses excellent facilities, including a well-appointed 41-seat cinema, two film studios, edit suites and access to professional production equipment.
